Lot 1499
INDIA, Post-Mauryan (Panchala). Panchalas of Adhichhatra. Rajnyah Vijayamitra, circa 220 AD. 1/2 Karshapana (Bronze, 13 mm, 1.62 g). Conch shell placed horizontally on sacred platform, flanked by standards; above, chakra (sacred wheel). Rev. RAJNYAH / VIJAYAMI in Brahmi; in upper field to left, Panchala dynastic symbol. K. Singh: Two new Kings of Panchala, in: JONS 234 (2018), pp. 15-17. Pieper -. Very rare. Minor flan crack, otherwise, good very fine.

From a collection of coins from Central Asia.

The royal title Rajnyah and the iconography of Rajnyah Vijayamitra, a new ruler in the lineage of the Panchala kings, show that the Panchala coinage continued well into the Kushan era. This argues against a long numismatic interlude in northern India.
